What students are learning in Classroom Guidance
August lessons focus on the introduction of guidance classes along with the role of the school counselors. Different activities are incorporated to assist pre-school and Kindergarten students with adjustment to school transitions.
This month also emphasizes the importance of following rules and expectations along with explaining the district school wide Above The Plan plan. Second Step curriculum will also be introduced and used throughout the school year. September guidance lessons will focus on identifying bullying behaviors and understanding what to do if they encounter similar situations. In addition, the monthly character trait (respect) will be discussed in classes. October lessons will focus on a continuation of no bullying and how to prevent it. To reinforce healthy lifestyles, Red Ribbon Week topics will be discussed and RRW activities will take place. November lessons will focus on empathy building and understanding emotions. These lessons will also promote kindness and understanding of others. December lessons will focus primarily on being thankful and having a caring heart. In addition, students will be reminded about the importance demonstrating kindness and choosing to be nice. January lessons will focus on a review of character education and listening skills. In addition, appreciation of self and others will be taught to grades PreK-2. February lessons will focus on the character trait of honesty and conflict resolution. March lessons will focus on study and test taking skills in preparation for end of the end tests. Grades Pre-K-1st will focus on establishing and maintaining friendships. April lessons will focus on career exploration and career goals. Students will participate in Career Day or Career on Wheels assemblies. May lessons will focus on the character traits such as fairness and teamwork which reinforces Fair Day expectations. Students will also reflect on highlights from the current school year and focus on goals for the next school year. 5th Grade students will focus on transitioning and related concerns for middle school. In addition, family life curriculum will be taught. |
